Galactic Squirrels Are Big On Christmas!

Christmas is a fabulous time to contemplate everything that we're grateful for! I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given to rehabilitate baby squirrels. I am grateful for the blessing of rescuing an injured squirrel and giving them the love and care they need to heal. I am grateful for all the squirrels of this planet who keep on planting trees and giving us more oxygen to breathe! I'm grateful for all the amazing friends I have. I'm especially grateful for being here on planet Earth at this auspicious time of transformation! I'm grateful for being able to share the gifts I have been given with all the amazing people I am surrounded by! I am grateful for the lovely song my grey squirrel (Earl) sings! Listen to this Christmas Carol sung by Earl's long lost cousin:

Translation into English:

"Merry Nut Days to You! Warm Hugs to You! Squirrel Love is Without Compare! The Bliss in my Squirrel Heart knows no bounds! To BE a Squirrel is to BE ONE with ALL!
All I want for Christmas is YOU!!!

Squirrels Bring Oneness to Planet Earth

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Squirreliji, Squirreliji,
Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare, Squirreliji, Squirreliji,

Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Squirreliji, Squirreliji,
Rama Rama,Hare Hare, Squirreliji, Squirreliji,

Have you noticed lately how blessed you are?
If you pay the least bit of attention to all the synchronicities that are happening, your heart will fill with gratitude! The incredible thing is that the Cosmos is giving to you constantly! And chanting is a wonderful way to tap into that expansive feeling of connection to All That Is...
It is believed that the sound vibration created by repeating the Maha Mantra gradually revives the state of pure God-consciousness aka Krishna consciousness aka Christ consciousness. This particular version of the chant (featured above) is blessed with the presence of a gracious squirrel. "Squirreliji" is the name given to the squirrel guardian of Father Sun. Since the beginning of time, the squirrel has been faithfully guarding Krishna Consciousness. That is why it is common to find symbols such as the one below. India's highest spiritual title, "paramahansa" literally means "supreme swan". The swan symbolizes the Grace of the Divine and the squirrel, it's guardian.

There is a beautiful Indian story called
Lord Rama and the Squirrel

You know that Rama was not just a great king; he was also an avatar of Lord Vishnu. But, did you know that a little squirrel once helped Lord Rama? How? Well, here is the story:
The wicked demon king Ravana had carried away Sita, the wife of Rama, the great prince who was in exile. Along with his brother Lakshmana, Rama went in search of his wife, and enlisted the help of the Vanara king, Sugreeva. Learning that Sita was kept at Lanka, the kingdom of Ravana, which lay across the ocean, Rama, along with the Vanara army, arrived at the seashore.
To reach Lanka, they had to cross the vast ocean, and after much discussion, it was decided that a bridge would be built across the ocean. The multitudes of monkeys and bears which formed the Vanara army were asked to bring stones and boulders to the seashore, so that a bridge could be built.
Shouting with excitement, and happy at the prospect of helping Rama, who was a form of Lord Vishnu, the monkeys and bears ran around, looking for the biggest stones they could find. The Vanaras were a strong race, and they carried huge boulders, and even hills, on their shoulders easily, and dropped them in the ocean to help build the bridge.
The other animals at the seashore too wished to help Rama, and each of them helped him in his own way – the fishes and the other sea creatures did their bit by helping the boulders rest at the right place, while the birds flying overhead brought small stones to fill the gaps.
A small squirrel was seeing this huge effort, and he too wished to help. He thought for a moment, and then started collecting small pebbles lying on the shore, and dropped them in the ocean. After a while, he was too tired to even carry those pebbles, but still wanted to participate. He ran to the edge of the water, and, after rolling in the sand, ran to the water and washed himself. He ran back to the shore and rolled again, and more sand got stuck to him, since he was now wet. Again he ran to the water to wash himself. The small grains of sand which stuck to his body were all he could contribute to the massive task of building a bridge across the ocean!!
However, the small squirrel rushing to and fro on the shore was now getting in the way of the monkeys who were carrying huge boulders, and they started shouting at him, asking him to get out of the way.
“Brothers, I too want to help you. These small grains of sand are all I can throw into the ocean as my contribution to the bridge. Please do not shout at me”, said the little squirrel. The monkeys laughed out aloud, and shouted, “Of what use are these tiny grains of sand, which can scarcely be seen among the huge boulders and hills we are bringing. Get out of the way and let us do our work!”
The squirrel was unperturbed, and continued its work calmly. Finally one of the monkeys, in his anger, picked up the squirrel and flung him far away from the shore. Rama, who was watching this, caught the squirrel before it fell, and set it down carefully. He then addressed the Vanara army, “O Vanaras, you are brave and strong, and are doing a wonderful job bringing all these huge boulders and stones from far and dropping them in the ocean. But did you notice that it is the tiny pebbles and stones brought by this small squirrel and some of the other smaller creatures which are filling the small gaps left between the huge stones? Further, do you not realize that the tiny grains of sand brought by this squirrel are the ones which bind the whole structure and make it strong? Yet you scold this small creature and fling him away in anger!”
Hearing this, the Vanaras were ashamed, and bowed down their heads. Rama continued, “Always remember, however small, every task is equally important. A project can never be completed by the main people alone. They need the support of all, and however small, an effort should always be appreciated!”
Rama then turned to the squirrel and said softly, “My dear squirrel, I am sorry for the hurt caused to you by my army, and thank you for the help you have rendered to me. Please go and continue your work happily.” Saying this, he gently stroked the back of the squirrel with his fingers, and three lines appeared where the Lord’s fingers had touched it. Thus did the squirrels get the 3 stripes on their backs, as a blessing from Lord Rama, to remind us that no task, however small, is unimportant! Every task should be looked upon as service to the lord, and his blessings will always be with us.

Contemplating the Life of a Squirrel Leads to Nirvana

Have you ever just sat and watched a little squirrel for hours? They are the most amazing little beings... and totally enlightened! Time and time again they have shown me that they are completely at one with the Way, the Tao, the Cosmos! For example, when I would see a dog chasing a squirrel, the thought would come: "Poor little squirrel... don't let the dog catch you and hurt you!" After a lot of contemplation and observation, I've come to realize that the dog just wants to play and the squirrel just wants to play and the only one that is stressed out is me. The squirrel simply runs up a tree and starts barking. Sometimes the squirrel will even run to branches just out of reach of the dog and play with the dog. The squirrel is totally fine with whatever happens. Human beings argue with reality... animals don't. I LOVE THAT!

Think about it! We humans have thoughts like:
"Something's missing in my life" or "I need to know what my life purpose is" or "I'm having a bad day" or "I can't do it all by myself"
Do you think a squirrel ever has thoughts like these? Not a chance! They are at peace with whatever life brings and they don't sit on their branches asking questions or trying to figure things out! They just live their lives.
I have spent the last ten years really observing the habits of our fine furry tailed friends. When they bury nuts, they don't necessarily remember where they put them. Humans have projected the belief that a squirrel remembers exactly where he put every nut and most people just assume this is true. But can you actually KNOW it's true? I propose that squirrels just bury nuts for all squirrels and will sniff them out and find them. But they may not be finding the very nut they buried. They really don't have a sense of "ownership". When my two rescue squirrels, Bucky and Pete were little, Bucky would be eating a cashew and Pete would come and take it from him and start eating it. Bucky didn't mind one bit. It was as if Pete didn't even experience Bucky as a separate squirrel! Watch this video and witness Oneness! If only we humans could all get along this well!

Jesus Loves the Little Baby Squirrels

"Truly I say to you...
except ye become as little squirrels,
ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven."

Matt.18:3
Squirrelady's Version

Almost everyone has heard some version of this quote... usually the one that refers to children. But what does it mean? What is it that squirrels and little children have in common? Innocence! Pure and simple! This quote just reminds us that if we want to live in joy and well being, we need to lighten up! When was the last time you just played? Little squirrels and children have no trouble playing all day long. Mostly what happens in our culture is that as children grow up into adults, they spend less and less time playing and more and more time working. That may be good for finances, but it's not necessarily that good for experiencing the joy of just being alive! The secret of squirrels is that they do not differentiate between work and play and therefore they are always enjoying each moment... just like little children.

Very few people realize that Jesus was really big on squirrels. That time his disciples witnessed him walking on water, they failed to mention that there was a little squirrel right next to him on water skies. Look closely at the photo below!

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt? Even this little squirrel at my feet has more faith than you."
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God and blessed is the little squirrel who accompanies you."
Matthew. 14:25-32

Bucky Goes To The Dentist

Did you know that little squirrel's teeth keep growing???
It's up to them to grind them down on tree bark and hard nuts. However, sometimes the teeth don't line up properly... that's what is called a malocclusion. Sometimes a squirrel is born with one but mostly it can happen when the squirrel has had a trauma to his face.
It was this past June when the day came to put Bucky outside in the big release cage. There he would get used to the sounds of the neighborhood... dogs barking, birds chirping, cars honking, etc. His brother Pete had been outside in that cage for about a month and finally was on his own. Pete always came back to the outside cage for food. I put little Bucky out one fine morning and to my surprise, he started running around inside the cage right away! Pete had been very cautious and hid in his little box inside the cage for a couple days before he decided to explore this larger environment. He had taken it very slowly. So when I saw Bucky so at ease, I thought "He'll be outside playing with Pete in no time!" I went inside the house and in about 15 minutes or so, I heard a big ruckus outside and squirrels chattering. I ran outside immediately to find Pete and another little squirrel jumping from the release cage to the roof. It seems they were running from a cat that decided to check out the new occupant! The cat had run off too. But little Bucky was chattering and chattering! I said, "Bucky, what are you upset about? you're the one that's safe in the cage!" But he kept on chattering! I opened the door of the cage to see what he was so upset about and to my horror, his little snout was all bloody! My heart just sank...I couldn't imagine what could have happened! I took Bucky inside the house right away and cleaned his face. Poor little guy was so upset. It seems that he had been chewing on the cage and visiting with Pete who was on the outside. Then when the cat came and startled them, Pete took off running and Bucky got his teeth stuck on the wire! In his fright to get away, he pulled his teeth forward and cut his snout! On My!

Little Bucky's face was so sore that he couldn't chew anything for awhile. He got his nourishment from banana milkshakes! It took a good while before he could chew, but what was worse, he couldn't grind down his own teeth! That means they kept growing! Soon enough, those teeth would have to be trimmed!

It became harder and harder to chew
pecans and impossible to crack a shell!
So after a lot of research and talking to
other squirrel rehabblers, I got a pair of
jewelry cutter clippers and trimmed his
upper left tooth. That's all he could handle.
Then I had a vet tech hold him so I could
trim the upper right tooth. After that little
adventure, Bucky gave the vet tech a dirty look, as if to say, "I know who you are and I promise you that will not happen again!"

Needless to say, ever since that day, Bucky would not let me or anyone near his teeth. Consequently, they grew and grew and pretty soon he couldn't chew the nuts he loves so much. So I had to make an appointment with a very considerate vet named Dr.Paul. One very early morning, before little Bucky was awake, I put his little squirrel nest box in a cage and covered it with blankets before he could notice. We drove up to Dr.Paul's office and filled out all the papers. Dr.Paul administered some fast acting anasthesia and in less than 15 minutes, Bucky had brand new teefers!!! It was a squirrel miracle!
I brought him home and put his nest box back in his cage. Then after a nap, Bucky emerged from his nest and looked around like he had just awoken from a dream. I said, "Hi Bucky, would you like a nut?" I gave him several pecans and he ate one after another without stopping. He was so happy to be
able to chew again! We were so delighted that Bucky and I played all afternoon, celebrating! Bucky sends a big THANK YOU to Dr.Paul and his staff!

Thank you to Dr. Paul for trimming Bucky's teeth! Here he is enjoying every bite!!!!!

Buddha Had A Squirrel Advisor!

Buddha's Inspiration came from a little squirrel...

People often underestimate the amazing wisdom of our furry tailed ones! Just the other day my little squirrel Bucky told me, "There is no point trying to do anything ahead of its time. The universe won't allow it. If you simply wait, the action will arise on its own and it will be exactly on time!" I love having a squirrel teacher in my home. He told me that is how all the Great Masters got their inspiration. He said little squirrels don't care who gets credit for the idea... they just want the ideas to get out into the morphogenic field.

These photos were
all taken during

Squirrel Angels Are Watching Over You!

Did you know that there are 22 squirrel angels for every human being on the earth? Practically everyone knows that a squirrel's main job is to plant trees. But very few realize that the other important responsibility a squirrel has is to guide and teach human beings the Way of Lovingkindness. You can observe the way mama squirrels take care of their young. They are gentle, yet firm. They exemplify unconditional love and are great teachers. You may also observe that squirrels like to play and even cuddle with each other. They seem to enjoy every moment and for them, there is no difference between work and play. They certainly have mastered the art of enjoying life!

Prayer to the Guardian Angel Squirrel

Squirrel Angel of God, my guardian dear,
To whom God's Love commits me here.
Ever this day, be at my side,
To light and guard, to love and guide. Amen.

The Universe is conspiring on your behalf !

Have you thanked the squirrels today?

Ghandi said: " You can judge a nation according to the way it treats its own animals."

Perhaps the most significant species of animals in North america is the squirrel! They are part of every corner of the continent, living in urban and rural areas and in wilderness. They live in large numbers in other parts of the world, such as most European forests.

Did you know that their existence in large numbers was a major factor in developing and maintaining the world's forests; THE SQUIRRELS BEING ONE OF THE FEW SPECIES OF ANIMALS WITH DIRECT CONTRIBUTION IN DEVELOPING AND MAINTAINING THE FORESTS DURING MILLIONS OF YEARS, by planting various nuts. Their existence as a species is appreciated to have begun about 35 million years ago!

It is time for us to have the maturity and common sense to understand and appreciate their major, vital importance for us and for the Earth as a whole, and to stop giving them the "pests" status, associating squirrels with rats (both are rodents), savaging and abusing them. If they chew the roof to keep warm for winter, or eat the bulbs from the garden, desparate of hunger, we have to remember- WE BREATHE OUR AIR BECAUSE OF SQUIRRELS IN PART.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Feed them. Feed first the ones around your house. Buy peanuts, walnuts, pecans, filberts, sunflower seeds. (20 pounds of peanuts are $25, which is not too much), buy a 20-pound bag for the winter months. and go in the park of your choice and feed them. AND BECAUSE WE OWE THEM SO MUCH, IT IS OUR VERY DUTY TO PROTECT THEM FROM ABUSES, TO TREAT THEM IN A HUMANE AND CIVILIZED WAY AND TO COMPENSATE THEM FOR TAKING OVER THEIR HABITAT by helping them with food and nests.

It's time to live in peace with our furry tailed friends. God bless al the squirrels of the world!

Kudos to Annick, my new heroine for following her heart's call to compassion! Keep on feeding those critters, girlfriend!!

God Bless You Annick!

Be Like a Squirrel!

Walt Whitman said it best:

Placid and Self-contained.

I think I could turn and live with squirrels,
They are so placid and self-contained,
I stand and look at them long and long.
They do not sweat and whine about their condition.
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins,
They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God,
Not one is dissatisfied,
Not one is demented with the mania of owning things,
Not one kneels to another,
Nor to his kind that lived thousands of years ago,
Not one is respectable or unhappy over the whole earth.

Love Song to Bucky

LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED!

THERE IS NO GREATER LOVE THAN THE LOVE OF SQUIRRELS!!!

I Have a Squirrel Companion...
I call him Little Bucky;
Lays by my side,
In my sleeve hides,
He makes me feel so lucky!

He gives me little kisses,
And on my lap he'll lay...
His coat of fur
Is soft as down;
I love him more than I can say!

His ways are sweet and gentle,
He never whines or worries;
Lives in the now
Not knowing how,
Moves fast, yet never hurries!

He plays with wild abandon,
And rests in blissful solace;
His mind is free,
Oh, could it be...
That he lives in true balance?

So teach me little Bucky,
To see the world through your eyes...
Each moment new,
All good, all true;
Right where I live is Paradise!

I have a squirrel companion,
And on my lap he'll lay.
His love is pure,
His path is sure...
Love loves us more than I can say!

Floppity is a Grandmother Squirrel

Isn't she a beautiful grandmother?
I hope I look this good
when I'm a grandmother!
Good going, Floppity!

Floppity is a Grandmother Squirrel!
About 8 years ago I first met little Floppity. I called her Floppity because she had tumors all over her little body and there was one on each ear which gave her floppy ears. She had a condition some call "squirrel pox". When I first saw her I fell in love with her. I fed Floppity shelled pecans every day and while she sat and ate them, I would give her Reiki (healing energy). After about two months, each of the growths dried up and fell off. She has never had any problems after that. Her first litter was affected with the pox and 2 out of the 3 babies died, but the third squirrel survived and healed. I called her Bumpy. Then Bumpy grew up and had a litter and I'm happy to report that her young are free of pox! Squirrels, and in fact all animals, love Reiki healing energy! If you are interested in learning Reiki, please contact me at squirrelady@gmail.com and you can visit www.squirrelplanet to learn more about Reiki.

First Squirrel Crossing Sign in Austin

History is Made in Austin: First Ever Squirrel Crossing Sign!!!

Thanks to the squirrel conscious folks at Austin Parks and Rec at 200 S.Lamar for looking out for our furry tailed friends! All the little squirrels that like to hang out there at Butler Shores are very grateful... especially the baby squirrels. Bucky (see previous pages) let us know that often the mama squirrels get hit by cars that speed in and out of the Park on Riverside just west of Lamar. This leaves us with orphaned babies that need full time care... Thank you to the good people at Austin Parks and Rec. for caring enough to put up a Squirrel Crossing Sign! Let's hope to see more of these signs throughout Austin! Let's make Austin a "squirrel-friendly" town!
